UCC Commencement 2008
The UCC graduation is always a unique and festive celebration. The University College Community is proud of its role in helping adult and non-traditional students, most of whom must juggle the responsibilities of work, family, and school to achieve their lifelong goal of a college education. We hope you will enjoy this momentous event along with your family and friends.
The following provides 2008 University College Commencement information. Please visit this site for up-to-date details prior to commencement. New Jersey Commission on Higher Education Commencement Speaker for the University College (School of Arts & Sciences) Commencement Convocation 2008 Jane Oates was named the Executive Director of the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education and Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Jon S. Corzine in March 2006. Since her arrival in New Jersey, she has concentrated on linking higher education with K-12 education and the workforce. Jane worked to make federal education legislation more responsive to the needs of non-traditional students. Now in New Jersey in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDLWD), she is working to create real opportunities for adult/non-traditional students. During her term, the Commission has engaged in work with the Commissioner of Education on elementary and secondary teacher quality, increasing the rigor of high school coursework, and aligning high school curriculum with college readiness. The Commission has engaged in work with the Commissioner of Labor on linking the colleges with the workforce investment system, increasing opportunities to align workforce programs with college credit and the establishment of Innovation Partnership Institutes—a collaboration between business sectors and colleges to increase the relevance of coursework to the work of New Jersey businesses. The Commission has also worked collaboratively with the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism to improve the visibility of student volunteerism and increase the opportunities for all students to engage in service.Ms. Oates currently serves on the State Employment and Training Commission (SETC), the State Council for Adult Literacy Education Services (SCALES), the New Jersey High School Redesign Task Force, the Public Sector Work Group, and the New Jersey Commerce Commission. Prior to joining Governor Corzine in March 2006, Ms. Oates was the Senior Policy Advisor on higher education, national service, adult literacy, education research, and workforce issues to Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. While in the Senate, Ms. Oates was the lead staff to the Democratic members of the HELP Committee on two reauthorizations of the Higher Education Act, the reauthorization of the Office of Educational Research, the creation and implementation of the Workforce Investment Act, and The Carl Perkins Vocational Education Act. Ms. Oates began her career as a special education teacher in the Boston and Philadelphia Public Schools and later served as Director of Services to the Field at the Center for Research and Human Development at Temple University. You may participate in the UC 2008 commencement if you completed all degree requirements and graduated in October 2007, January 2008, or you completed all degree requirements and will graduate May 2008. The following students may be considered for participation in the May 2008 Convocation Commencement Ceremony:
In order to be eligible for review, you must fill out the Exception Form and fax, mail or hand carry to UCC or email ucnboss@rci.rutgers.edu, providing your name, RUID number, and valid reason for requesting an exception. You should also attach or submit an SAS Senior Review or documentation supporting your expected degree requirement completions. You will be informed as soon as a decision is rendered, which may take place within the week that the form is submitted. Participation in commencement refers specifically to attending and taking part in the UCC ceremony. Graduation refers to having completed all degree requirements with a 2.0 or better. MARSHALLING OF DEGREE CANDIDATES: Certified degree candidates are asked to please report to the marshalling area located in the RAC no later than 5:30 pm to ensure proper check-in and make certain all candidates will be lined up alphabetically. You will be issued a unique marshalling number at check-in, which indicates your name and type of conferred degree. For example, BA 264 means that you will be the 264th candidate in line for receipt of the Bachelor of Arts degree. All candidates are required to have a marshalling card for photography purposes and will be required to phonetically write name for the announcer. When you arrive at the RAC, University College Marshals will be present to help you find the correct group and to put you into the correct order. Late arrivals will be accommodated as best as possible. Students and guests will be assisted by the staff at the RAC. If you would like more information, please email ucnboss@rci.rutgers.edu. Actual conferred diplomas will be mailed after the May commencement to May 2008 graduates at your address. Students are asked to be certain that the address on record is accurate. Changes can be made at the Registrar's Office. October 2007, January 2008 and May 2008 graduates may complete the following Registrar form for delivery of diploma via US Postal Service: Diploma Mailing Request Form. Note: Diplomas dated with a May 2008 conferral will be delivered throughout the summer. Diplomas and Official Transcripts will be withheld from all students whose financial accounts and debts (including tuition, housing, parking, and library) are not cleared. Degrees are conferred by the university upon recommendation of the faculty. Degree Verification of October and January degrees will be available from the Office of the Registrar in the form of an Official Transcript. http://registrar.rutgers.edu/NB/MAILDIPL.HTM The Women's League of Rutgers University invites you to view the unique diploma holder which has renditions of historic landmarks of Rutgers by nationally known artist Robin Lauersdorf. A portion of the diploma frame sales will go towards scholarships. Please see the following diploma order forms for more details. Gold Honor Cords will be given out at the check in area of the RAC for those students who have attained college honors with their degree. Beginning this year the Latin form of honors will be bestowed: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude. GPA requirements for distinctions:
When you purchase your cap and gown, you will also be given three graduation invitations. Please note that these invitations are “keepsakes” for you and your family. We have no limit on the number of guests who may attend the UC 2008 Commencement Convocation. It is your responsibility to be kept informed. It is a good idea to keep this page bookmarked (Ctrl + D). The University College New Brunswick Rutgers Alumni Association (UCNBRAA) is sponsoring a Reunion Day Celebration and Festivities in honor of Alumni and the new graduating Class of 2008. The event will begin with a parade on Saturday, May 17, 2008 opening at 10:15 am at the gathering area of Old Queens. The picnic will begin 12:00 noon until 4:00pm in Deiner Park (behind Dorms overseeing the Raritan River). Graduates, family and friends welcome. Please RSVP. Date: Friday, May 16, 2008 Place: Multipurpose Room (behind the Fireside Lounge), Busch Campus Time: 7:00 PM Graduating seniors and their guest are invited to the University College 2008 Senior Graduation Party, Friday, May 16, 7:00pm-11:00pm at the Multipurpose Room, Busch Campus. In your honor, we will celebrate your achievement and having reached your academic and professional goals. Please note that this party will be hosted and paid for by The University College Council, and there is no charge to you or your guests. A buffet dinner will be served with a choice of Grilled Chicken Breast with seasonal salsa; sliced London broil with brown gravy; and eggplant parmesan. Sides will consist of herb roasted potatoes and green beans &roasted red peppers. For dessert there will be carrot and chocolate cake. After dinner, a DJ will play music so that you can dance to your heart’s content. Dress is casual chic. Come meet other graduates and the UCC faculty and staff. We look forward to seeing you. Please RSVP: bijp@rci.rutgers.edu. Portrait Sitting: The Senior Class Council has provided portrait sitting for seniors at no charge, beginning March 2008. Chappell Graduation Images will take Cap & Gown portraits at the five Rutgers University Campus Centers. You will receive a passport-sized color proof in the mail a week after you’ve had your photograph taken and two to three days after the sitting, you will be provided with a link to your digital proofs. Schedule your session online or call 1-800-424-3686. During the Commencement Ceremony, Chappell Graduation Images will take three pictures of each student: receiving their diplomas, a close-up photo, and a commencement portrait. Please note that there is no obligation on your part to purchase the photographs. In an effort to inform the graduates and their families about photos at the upcoming ceremony, Chappell has developed a new preregistration system which allows the graduates and/or their families to provide their email and mailing address information to Chappell prior to the ceremony. They can also add up to 6 family members' contact information as well to help share the good news and the photos!UC Graduates can pre-register their email, as well as friends and family email addresses and Graduation Images will contact all as soon as photos are available for online viewing and ordering. |
