Topic: Learnability and the Formal Foundations of Phonology
This semester, the course will examine key concepts in language learnability, and how they relate to key elements of phonological theory, with emphasis on Optimality Theory. The course will include some computational content, and examine some details of algorithms that are of importance both to learning and to core phonological analysis. Significant programming experience is not required; I expect have some software available allowing the students to run and experiment with some of the algorithms being studied.
