On Monday, October 12th, RU FAIR Professors, Judy Weis and Maggie Shiffrar,
hosted a gender equity luncheon to remember the groundbreaking complaint that was issued from Rutgers Newark faculty in the 1970's and resulted in pay equity for all professors. Jessica Karpoff, daughter of Dr. Helen R. Strausser, eloquently summaries her mother, a leader on campus:
"My mother was a petite woman physically; 5’2” & 78 pounds soaking wet. But to me, she was a giant among women and men. Despite being belittled as the token female in her science classes at school, being disparaged by neighbors who shunned her manly work ethic, and being underpaid by Rutgers for being female, she faced her share of adversity and gender animosity with unparalleled strength and determination that I cannot help but admire.
In an era when petticoats prevailed, and “the little woman at home” mentality
was the temperament of the day, Mom somehow managed to receive her degrees, raise a loving family, teach undergraduate and graduate day and night courses, mentor her many Ph.D candidates, do research, author articles on cancer, AIDS and lupus, champion women’s rights, and survive breast cancer. And she did it all with dignity, grace, and a lot of gumption.
Yesterday, I spoke to my aunt, a 90 year old youngster in CA. When I told her
about today, she boomed “What took them so long?” And so on behalf of Aunt
Gert and the entire Strausser Family, I thank you today for this wonderful tribute
to our beloved Dr. Helen R. Strausser. "

The Department of Animal Sciences invites you to a special lecture by Dr. Temple Grandin on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 11:00 AM to 12 noon, at the Round House, College Farm Road, G. H. Cook Campus. Dr. Temple Grandin is a designer of livestock handling facilities and a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Facilities she has designed are located in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. In North America, almost half of the cattle are handled in a center track restrainer system that she designed for meat plants. She has also developed an objective scoring system for assessing handling of cattle and pigs at meat plants. This scoring system is being used by many large corporations to improve animal welfare.
