Albert R. Gamper Jr.

Business Executive

University College–Newark 1966

Albert R. Gamper Jr. has long had an active hand in guiding Rutgers. A member of the university's Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, as well as a former member of the Rutgers University Foundation Board of Overseers, his service to Rutgers is only outdone by his professional work. Until his 2004 retirement, he was chair and CEO of CIT Group. Under his leadership, CIT's net operating income rose and the company received a "AA" (very high quality) credit rating. During his tenure, he restructured the company into a more efficient and profitable organization. In 1997, he took CIT public, listing it on the New York Stock Exchange. Gamper also finds time for public service in a number of areas. He has been a member of the boards of directors of PSEG and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center; a trustee of New Jersey Network, Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, and Thirteen/WNET; and a member of the finance council of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. The Rutgers University Alumni Federation awarded Gamper a Meritorious Service Award in 2001.
