We do not currently have any training experiences available for
undergraduates. There are a number of useful opportunities available
in other settings. See peer counseling for

Opportunities for Graduate Students
There are four kinds of training opportunities available at Counseling and Psychological Services for graduate students. These include practicum, pre-doctoral internships and post-doctoral fellowships. The practicum, internship and post-doctoral fellowships are open to graduate students currently enrolled in appropriate programs at Rutgers as well as at other universities. All programs provide experience with the range of psychological services offered in a university counseling setting. These include
intake assessments/triage, individual and group psychotherapy, crisis
intervention, and psychological education and consultation
services. Experience in more specialized areas such as
multicultural issues, diversity, eating disorders and sports
psychology are also available. Our program is individually
tailored to the needs of the trainee with an emphasis on the
development and refinement of sound clinical skills. Supervision
is given by experienced, licensed clinicians.

Internship
For advanced graduate students, five full-time pre-doctoral internships with a stipend are available. Follow the link above for more information.

Practicum
For graduate students from first year up to the internship stage of training. Both beginning and advanced level trainees are encouraged to apply. See the link above for more information.
Post-Doctoral Training Opportunities
There are also limited opportunities for paid or unpaid post-doctoral fellowships at the Counseling Center. Each year we offer both full-time funded and part-time unfunded training opportunities for recent recipients of the doctoral degree looking to accrue supervised clinical experience for licensure. The following guidelines apply:
Eligibility
- Completion of a doctoral program in clinical/counseling psychology or closely related field (including internship).
- An interview with one or more senior staff members at the Center prior to acceptance.
Application
Application for a post-doctoral position should be made to Dr. Mark J. Forest, Associate Director for Clinical Training. To give the best chance of acceptance, application should be made by Jan 15th of the year in which one wishes to begin work. Post-docs can begin either during the summer or at the beginning of the fall semester (September).
General policies
All part-time post-docs are required to see a minimum of 4 clients in exchange for 1 hour of individual supervision with a senior staff member. Additional hours and the possibility of a structured full-time post-doctoral training position may be negotiated with the Training Director. Given sufficient notice, the University will usually provide malpractice and liability coverage for post-docs working at the Center. However, post-docs (like paid staff members) are also strongly encouraged to obtain their own professional liability insurance. Unless otherwise specified, all post-doc arrangements are made for one academic year with the option of renewal based on the discretion of the Associate Director for Clinical Training.
