A crusty TEC bishop took me aside as we walked to the reception after
Gene+ had become +Gene. She said a reporter had been pestering her to
comment on the the outspoken opposition to the occasion. "'Young
man,' I told him, 'you turn that thing [his taperecorder] off.' And
when he did, I said, 'I'll tell you what this is all about. It's a
pissing contest between white old men. Now you can turn your
taperecorder back on again.'"
