Not a lot to say at the moment but I am reassessing my whole
understanding of a Christian response to Gay & Lesbian issues. My
ministry is as a Chaplain with the Australian Army and I have had
to face some pastoral issues associated with discrimination etc.
Through contacts in this process I have joined up with a local
fledgling support group for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and
Gays (PFLAG). Hopefully some good will come from this. Thankyou
for your site.

Regards
Alan

I am the Youth Minister at St. Luke's - Atlanta, a very gay-affirmative multicultural congregation. I have worked in youth ministry in the Episcopal Church for 11 years. But this is the first time I have accessed your web pages. The church has come a long way on lesbigay issues, but there is still a long road ahead. I can only put my hope, faith, and trust in God and try not to give up on the church's slow progress. It is very hard to defend the church to my gay friends when they see "Lambeth" headlines. Thanks for spending so much time putting so much helpful information in one place.

Dear Louie:
have just been appointed as Assistant Chaplain at Blair Academy
in Warren County in your diocese. It's a Presbyterian School by
origin but now pretty non-sectarian. I would love to know where
I can find a listing of how the bishops voted at Lambeth on the
sexuality resolution. I do not have my own access to e-mail and
the internet but must use a common computer in the library. Hope
yo are wel and can furnish me with the above information. Keep up
the Good Work on your home pages/web site.
   Best wishes: Fred Guyott

Thank you for a wonderful compilation of resources regarding
Lambeth conference '98, especially the material regarding the
conference on human sexuality (or fiasco if you will). It will be
most helpful to me. I look forward to perusing other areas of
your site further after I have discharged an obligation to
participate in a congregational forum addressing the Blessing of
Relationship in which I and a colleague co-officiated recently.
The forum will be on Sunday, Sept. 13th at 9 a.m. Your prayers
for all are welcome :-)

Follow up to message about First Promise.

Just in case, the Archbishop of Canterbury imagined he was
eligible for a blessing from the First Promise crowd ----------

A Letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury from The First
Promise Movement, 3 September 1998

 20 August 1998

The Most Honorable and Right Reverend George Carey

 The Archbishop of Canterbury

 United Kingdom

 Your Grace,

We greet you in the name of the Risen Lord Jesus.

We give God heartfelt thanks for your leadership at Lambeth. We
note with appreciation your timely remarks in the sexual
resolution debate, and also the sensitive way you sought to hear
all sides in this important discussion. We feel confident
that the mission of Jesus Christ has been strengthened by the
decisions made at Lambeth, and pray fervently that what some
call moral authority works its way into every fibre of Christ's
Body, in faith and in order.

At the same time we wish to respectfully inquire about several
matters which were not clarified by this momentous
 Lambeth Conference.

 1. Why was there no formal disassociation from Bishop John Spong
or his teaching? He has departed from the faith of the
apostles as delivered to the church, and has made a mockery of
the person and work of Jesus Christ. This was reported
widely, and is beyond dispute, and yet no specific actions were
taken against him, of any kind.

 2. Lambeth showed great courage in witnessing to the teaching of
Jesus Christ and Scripture in respect of Holy Matrimony
at a time when culture and church seek revision. Why was there
no call, therefore, for ECUSA to renounce and rescind its
recent decisions to develop same-sex blessing rites? Why was
there no rebuke or disassociation from those who claim
biblical and human warrant for ordaining practicing homosexuals,
and who have knowingly ordained such persons? Why
was the Presiding Bishop of the United States, who has publicly
stated that he has knowingly ordained practicing
homosexual persons, not called upon to demonstrate his loyalty
to the clear mind of Christ made known at Lambeth in the
landslide vote? At especially this juncture, we judge it curious
that Bishop Spong was singled out instead of being part of a
larger group deserving of the church's godly judgment, namely,
those who have signed the Koinonia Statement in favor of
endorsing same-sex practice. How can the mind of Christ at
Lambeth be so clearly revealed, and yet have no actual bearing
on practices that have obtained in ECUSA, and which we have
learned most recently will continue to occur?

 3. Finally, we note with sadness the failure to carry through
with the logic so carefully worked out, and so prayerfully
sought, on matters of faith. We rejoice over resolutions
regarding the authority of Holy Scripture; the upholding of Holy
Matrimony as the church has received this teaching from her
Lord; and the ruling that coercion or the mandating of women's
ordination cannot be made binding on Christian conscience. The
early church, however, sets a clear and unequivocal
example. Faith must be coordinated with order, discipline and
episcopal oversight. In the absence of catholic episcopal
oversight, the church has always recognized the need for
episcopal visitation from a source other than the local Bishop.
Given all the care that attended the working out of the faith of
Christ as this church receives it, we expected attention to the
clear need to follow through in terms of visitation and the
crossing of geographical borders, when necessary. Only in this
way can the faith of Jesus Christ and the witness of his
servants be upheld, nourished, and formally supported. Without
this,
the episcopal office can only be a source of disunity, as indeed
it has already become in ECUSA. There is no order without
 catholicity and scriptural obedience.

We shall circulate this letter throughout the communion in
appreciation for the bold witness to Jesus Christ that took place
under your leadership at Lambeth, and in order to signal our
solidarity with all Anglican Christians who seek the unifying
authority and healing power of God in Jesus Christ, who with the
Father and the Holy Spirit is worshipped and adored,
 unto the Ages of Ages.

 Warmly in Our Lord,

 The First Promise Movement

Dear, dear Louie,
I am an avid Lightspeed lurker and bless you every time I come
across your name. This Lambeth business has caused me so much
pain and I feel so for my brothers and sisters who are hurting.
I have been trying to compile a folder of Bishops Pastoral
letters to their Dioceses to pass on to my fellow Standing
Committee members this month.

Thank you for all you do for the cause and the church as a

thank you for fwd. all those messages of hope, including the one

I am back in the fold full of hope after reading these messages,
and I believe, while there is work to be done, and we must not
shirk from it, I believe the signs of triumph are already
appearing from the ashes of the Lambeth confused evil. God

I've kept abreast of so much important dialogue, thanks to your mailing list. I'm a liberal in a conservative diocese and church, but it's where I want to live and where I want to worship. Thanks to you I get a balance and a chance to see the other side. My husband and I were at Lambeth part of the time, spent 1/2 day at Kent and 1/2 day at Canterbury before travelling to Lichfield, Chester and York. We love the church and will never leave her.

Louie, can't tell you how happy I am finally to have Web access
and thereby access to the wonderful resources you post for the
church!! I marvel that you have time to eat, grade papers, or be
with Ernest, you post so much.

The Christ Church, Greenwich trip must have been something else.
I lived in that parish when I was in college, and was married
there, but never felt a member, no surprise. I admire your
gentle way and always clear statements.

Blessings, Elizabeth

God bless you for the faithful witness over the many years. First met you in San Francisco, 1976 and Boston MA 1980 at Integrity conventions.

With you and many others, I haave rejoiced with the groth of God's evident blessing on the church in lesgay issues. Here in Grace Cathedral, we have bee especially blessed due to our great Dean Alan Jones and Bishop William Swing culminating in the covenant of blesing at the high alter on February 7 of this year of the Rev. Gerald E. Shaon and Charles Edwrd Beattie. Thus we have established a precednt for the CONGREGATIONAL blessing of same-sex couples. Fantastic.

Now many of us are deeply concerned with control of the worldwide Anglican church ev;en though we are promised that our practice in this diocese will not be changed. (Letter from Wm Swing read at "A Liturgy of Lament and Hope" on August 12, 1998).

Love in Our Lord Christ

Re: Rev Harry's comments in response to the woman from Sydney...

Thank you Rev Harry - I completely concur with your views on the need to recognise the historical and cultural basis of homophobia. As someone who has trained over 400 youth, health and community workers and police officers across Australia over the last few years, I have learned that the most effective way to overcome homophobia is to allow people to accept that it is something they have learned and that they have the choice to learn beyond this prejudice.

The fastest way to get a homophobic person offside is to berate them for it. They feel threatened and wronged and this ultimately reinforces their homophobia. The tack I take is usually to do some unpacking and awareness raising and give participants the opportunity to look at how they might have learned that homophobia was wrong/sinful/immoral. We then talk about how completely understandable it is that the average Jo Public believes that homosexuality is wrong. Participants find this empowers them to take action without in an affirmative and positive way, and it also helps them to know how to tackle homophobia in other people they meet/work with/ teach/whatever.

Participants usually relish the opportunity to feel as though they contribute less to hate in the world and more to diversity, acceptance and celebration of cultural difference. They have lots of questions and I (along with an Oprah panel of local vocal g/l) do my/our best to be honest and answer them.

All people need is an opportunity NOT to feel feel threatened, and to understand that we are all part of the same human condition.

Regards,

Amanda Nickson

Thanks for all your information re Lambeth et al. Some of my
parishioners have found your articles, letters, etc. most helpful
in processing the conference, and have passed them on to me. I
thought I should direct access, finally!

I don't know if you remember, but my partner Mark Flora and I
were the first students to live on the close at GTS under their
new housing policy back in 1994. As you may recall, it was pure
hell for us with the administration there. Facilitated by
the stress caused at GTS, that relationship broke up. I'm now in
a new relationship, and serving as interim here at St. Mary the
Virgin, NYC with the title: Parish Vicar.

Thanks again for all your work. Please keep it up! :)

It gets depressing at times listening to so called literalists using the scripture to justify intolerance. Funnily (if there is anything funny about this), the inerrancy crowd are as quick to interpret or contextualize the inerrant Word to support their viewpoint as anyone. If the Bible "means what it says" it should need no interpretation.
If it does need interpreting, to understand the real meaning behind the words written by men of a different age and culture, then shouldn't the interpreting be guided by the example of Christ and be compassionate and inclusive, not judgmental and exclusive?
Another thing: the Bible says nothing directly about the sexual orientation of any of the disciples, or for that matter, of Christ, himself. Would their messages or His example be any less compelling - or authoritative - if it was revealed they were, or He was, gay?
The fact is it just doesn't matter, except to those who feel the need to raise themselves up at the expense of others.
Thank you for this excellent site.

I just received and read Kathleen McAdam's paper on "The Black
Experience within the Episcopal Church".

I am doing field education work with The Rev. Dr. Katherine Ward
at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Oakland. A Spirit-filled
place where all are welcome.

I know with certainty that "under the skin" we have much more in
common with each other than we have differences. One of the
highest compliments I have received this past year is that
several people have remarked that they forget that I am not
black. That, it seems to me, is the goal.

Thanks for your comments on Lambeth 1998. I am a priest of this Church (straight, as it happens), and I share the distress of many who deplore the mean-spirited know-nothingness of the majority of the bishops.

In forty years of ordained ministry I have often had occasion to reflect gratefully on the fact that bishops are not, in themselves, the church--against which, as we know, the gates of hell cannot prevail.

Thank you for printing out Spong's articles. I find him to be
such an interesting and articulate man. I am very excited to
read intelligent arguments counteracting the hatred that exists
in this world.

I was researching what bishops thought about 'authority'

Please comment:

I have to present a paper to the Anglican and Catholic clergy
get-together next month, giving the Anglican view on authority
and including the notion of the priesthood of believers. So I
went hunting in the Lambeth documents for the latest comments.
It seems that some bishops returned very seriously thinking of
the subject.

Louie: I used to help edit the "Journal of Homosexuality," in the early '80s. How's by you?

I was enraged by Lambeth, but Fred Borsch, our bishop in LA, seems to be AOK. -- Stuart

Just got here, I have not spent much time, but in the future
will consider before I sign the book. I am however pleased that
some where in the world that is a religious group that can
reason rather that hide behind the scripture.
