I'm speechless - and incredibly grateful. I'm 75.
Spent nearly 5 years at St. Gregory's Benedictine house in Michigan, left around gay issues, was quietly dropped from Candidacy for the priesthood after having completed training and exams. Rose throgh the ranks in Voc.Rehab to head two succesive state agencies, only to have the whole thing cave in on me when I came out.
Got involved in Scientology because a health professional convinced me they could cure me of being gay. Lots more but I want to thank you, for all you've done. Thank G I made the decision after I left St. Gregory's not to judge God by those who profess to represent God. Years of search, study and prayer have taught me that God made me gay BECAUSE God loves me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are already mightily blessed. Robert

Thanks for the full text of Spong's
declaration and the responses. Getting
information here has been tricky as the
local bishop has only expressed outrage
and people at the parish level either don't
know about the declaration or want it to
go away. Having left the Roman Catholic
church due to reasonable disbelief in
papal infallibility and an increasing
intolerance of genuine dialogue, I hope
my newly adopted Episcopal Church will
not lose its way.

Lambeth reports

Please comment:

The only reason I was curious enough to visit your site was that I had used your essay in _Multitude_ in my Eng. Comp. 101 class and recognized your name. I had been impressed with your writing and in this extremely conservative community (Lancaster, PA) felt that it presented a number of important issues in a way that invited real connection from the reader.

great pain that i sit in my den reading and re-reading about the

Lambeth Report

Please comment:

We too are distressed with the Anglican Bishop's vote at Lambeth. We also know that the truth will set us free! We are strong supporters of our lesbigay friends and the issues that impact their lives. Keep up your great work. We both met you at convention and look forward to another encounter.

Anglican Documents and Arguements

Please comment:

Louie,
My heart goes out to you on this infamous day at Lambeth. I have
always been proud of the tolerance and acceptance within the
Episcopal church. This resolution on sexuality is such nonsense.
I encourage you to carry on knowing that the church will come
around as you said. I am a older (56) postulant in my final year
of Seminary ( United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities). I
really don't know what to say, I am ashamed of my brothers in
Christ, and angry! I am sure that love is the answer, as it
always is.
Shalom,
John Payne

I am a gay Catholic in a welcoming parish in SF. I have been
following your reportage of the Lambeth Conference and wanted to
send a word of encouragement and solidarity at a hard time. I
think what you are feeling now is not dissimilar to what we RCs
experience. To some extent it is the dilemma of belonging to a
Catholic or world church - there are an awful lot of people in
other parts of the world who have not made the journey we have
and who have little appreciation of what that journey involves.
I am talking about the "journey" of the seriously believing
Christian who is gay. Anyway - Coraggio!

You do a great and wonderful service to all of us who need a
clearinghouse of information regarding lesbigay issues in the
church. Many thanks from a fellow academician. The time and
effort is unbelievable. Too bad the so called administrators of
the church don't share your committment to intellectual and
scholarly pursuit. Like other adminstrators they appear to be
ability challenged and the little they do have they minimize
rather than maximize.

Since the Anglican Communion has made it's point quite clear will you
now leave and form your own church where homosexuals will feel welcome?
If not will the Anglican Communion withdraw recognition of the
Episcopal Church as a member of that communion? Will the Episcopal
Church undergo schism at the General Convention 2000 here in Colorado
over this issue?

[Note: I shared this 'welcome' to Colorado with the Integrity mailing
list, and it prompted the two responses below, shared with Shirley's
and Harry's permission -- L.]:

Bought and paid for bigots from the third world hardly speak
authentically for Anglicanism any more than those from the first world
who funded the transaction. We are here, dear soul. We are not going
anywhere. Some of us are ordained. A spasm of reactionary hatred at
a conference cannot undo what God has done.

Crucifixion of prophetic voices has always been a part of organized
religion. The question is what role you will play in that crucifixion -
that of the Roman empire protecting its power, the Saducees protecting
their privilege and religious institution, the Pharisees guarding their
social status or the followers of Jesus who once again watch the bearers
of the Gospel crucified by hatred, fear, ignorance and protection of
investments.

The choice is yours. Pray God will assist you with divine grace
in that decision making.

p.s. for those of us who have considered leaving, it is precisely voices
like yours that will prevent that from happening.

Lambeth...I read almost every article posted there!!

Please comment:

Thank you, Sweetie, for all the effort to provide an information
base for those of us interested in what happened at Lambeth. I
am so pleased to see that Creighton Robertson, my bishop, signed
the pastoral letter to Gay Christians. With Andrew Fairfield so
near to the north is it not east for Creighton to be so bold.
He knows me and my partner, Gene. The bishop and we (Gene and
me) are oblates of the Benedictine Abbey of Blue Cloud here in
SD. I also must say that you are a shadow of your former
self. Having worked really hard to lose 47 pounds since January

Hugs to you Sweetie!

I came here specifically to read what you had to say about the
vote at Lambeth. As a seminarian, I am confronted with profound
doubt about the church of my birth and of my choice. Your words
of encouragement and exhortation help me make some sense. I am a
relative and friend of lesbigay people, but also a relative of
Episcopal and other denominational fundamentalists. You give me
courage to hold fast to the faith: that nothing indeed separates
us from the love of God in Christ.

Thanks, as always, for your good work and witness.

Things do seem discouraging right now, and it's very frustrating
to feel as if there's nothing one can do about it. On the other
hand, I've recently been attending a little semi-surburban
parish, which nevertheless a little over a year and a half ago
decided to call a rector who happens also to be a lesbian with a
partner. In the time since her call, there have been 13
baptisms, in a parish which (in the summer at least) has a Sunday
attendance not much over 50. There was today a post coffee hour
gathering in which those present spent a fair amount of time
talking about how unhappy they were about the Lambeth
developments. But(TBTG), it didn't stop with just complaining and
commiserating (tho' we do occasionally need to do that and it's
ok). The parishoners at this gathering concluded that some would
go to the vestry this week and ask them to send a letter to our
bishop and to the local newspaper (and my impression is that the
vestry is likely to be responsive in a positive way).

The point of this little story is that people need a positive way
to respond - it's not enough to sit and gripe with the
like-minded. My hope is that some collective means to do this
sort of positive response will develop - so people don't feel
they're alone and helpless. Yes, we need to have faith and be
patient, but it is helpful to have something to do as well, and
to know that others are out there doing similar things.

Maybe this page or another could be a resource?

I am second Ralph's story in your book "A book of Revelations"
am in a very liberal church which accepts gays. we had a gay
priest for 12 or so years with his lover who recently was given
a parish and house for he and his lover in Cinn. Rev Reed
Farrel, am now 71 yrs old and am at last in a relationship with
Victor Miller. We don't live together. I love him in my own way
but can't really wildly say I'm struck! I blame this all on my
Catholic bringing up! I am happy but still can't admit I'm gay
to my remaining 81 yr old sister or my niece! My son is very
accepting which is wonderful. My wife of 21 yrs died in 78 after
2 yrs of fighting cancer! I keep my membership in Western Mass
as there is no near by chapter other than Tampa and that's too
far for me to go to. I also am happier in St. Boniface Church as
they are very welcoming!

Dear Louie,
Carol Laplante has been keeping me up to date with Lambeth...I've
been too busy with my little blue coller mission...children
murdered by husband, drugs, no health insurance, abusive fathers,
etc. to be on line for Lambeth. But I am told that Betsy and I
are abominations and I am no priest....ah well.
***But, I cannot help but believe that Spong's arrogant 19th
century totally out of date rationalism and attacks on the piety
which many of us live by, did *not* help. Also, as a radical
feminist/lesbian, I experience most of this discussion as
Guy-Sex-Stuff. Of course, the resolution is *not* about
homosexuality, but about patriarchy, the continued dominance of
the Penetrator...where is this acknowledged...that it all began
with the Ordination of Women and this is but a (excuse me)
"rear-guard action". Could we talk about this???
Thanks for keeping the Faith.
respectfully and admiringly,
Ellie McLaughlin+

I appreciated the Pastoral statement to lesgay Anglicans. I've
just had an unpleasant encounter in my church with one of the
Ugandan bishops from Canterbury, who we've supported financially
for many years;he had no interest in knowing of my journey as a
lesbian Christian. I don't mind honest disagreement and respect
of positions held in good conscience but i felt savaged last
night after the church service. I have many supportive friends
but I know others who feel they are hanging onto their faith by
their fingertips after this week. I am Convenor of the
Evangelical Fellowship of Lesbian and gay Christians and
Co-President of the European Forum of Lesbian and Gay Christian
Groups. I accept the Pastoral Statement as being made in good
faith and am grateful.

For the past three weeks I have been reading all I can about
Lambeth via the Lambeth webpage and the questionable coverage by
London newspapers. I have just found your coverage and noticed

My wife and I fall into the (hopefully) straight but sensative
catagory. She, being the Anglican in the family, has done
informal Anglican outreach in the gay community as she is just
naturally comfortable in such cirles. (Might have to do with her
one time aspirations towards a career in music, or it might
have to do with the priest who introduced her to Anglicanism,
who was openly gay himself.)

She and I were both taken aback by the Lambeth resolution, though
her congregation is openly opposed to it and both of the local
Bishops (San Francisco and ElCamino real) have spoken out against
it.

As much as I can say I enjoy any part of this, which isn't much,
I enjoyed your peice on the issue. I do agree that now is a tiem
for all those of us whose minds have made it into the 20th C. to
stand up and be counted.

I am shocked and truly upset after reading of the Lambeth vote on homosexuality. I pray that my Church will someday accept us for who we were created to be. I can only hope this vote is not an indication of things to come from our own Epicopal Church in the US. Thank God for our Bishop here in East Tennessee..Robert Tharp...and his courage to vote against this travesty.

Very appreciative of this resource for information,
particularly related to Lambeth and what was said re
homosexuality and responses. I feel sadness and wish to
express support for ongoing efforts toward realizing "full
inclusivity."

Thanks for your commentary re: Lambeth atrocities. I was feeling a little crazy. Not at all expecting the lopsided vote and deeply offended by the vitriole. Our PB was silent. Courage and integrity apparently are not desireable traits for the priesthood. Men and women who spewed forth the venom at Lambeth are not "traditionalists" or "conservatives". They are simply ignorant and hateful people, many of whom seem to take pride in their ignorance and wear it like some noble uniform. They are still stuck in the old testament, wandering around the desert of their hearts, irritated and frightened by difference and diversity. What God blesses with unique authenticity, they damn, blaspheme and scapegoat. Lambeth represents true institutional decadence and I can smell it all the way in Indiana. Your caviate is well justified and necessary. John Spong is right, the church must change or die, Lambeth is part of the dying process. Unfortunately, it is doing great harm with !
its public bigotry spectacle, sending new energy into dark places and minds who are all too delighted to do their violence physically, spiritually and psychologically in the name of "God". Comfort and solace is no longer here in this toxic environment. I must caution my brothers and sisters looking for love and community to go elsewhere. Only the warriers can remain, careful not to stay beyond the point of redemption. We are close.

I'm a long time member of the Episcopal Church and a member of
St. John the Baptist in Capitola,CA. Also, my wife and I are 25
year friends of Gil Grady and Dottie Fuller. We recently had a
potluck at our home and 23 parish members came and pledged
support for "Integrity". In fact one of them called this
evening and asked me to look up your report on the Net. That's
how Iv'e come to sign your guestbook and write this comment.

P.S. At that meeting we were able to round up a little
subscription money for memberships and now people are asking for
pins. Gil says "Integrity" no longer makes them. It's the
episcopal sheild with the lambda. I have one and find it very
effective (because it's subtle)and has provided me with lots of
invitations to "witness". Can you help with this?

Excellent message on the Lambeth Conference. I am disappointed
in many of the Anglican bishop's treatment of the lesigay issue
and cannot believe the stance of many of the African bishops. I
am a gay man who is in a very committed relationship that is
better than most of the marriages of my heterosexual friends.
Thank God for bishops like John Spong. I am an Episcopalian and
will continue to stay in my church. Thanks for the opportunity
to express my views.

I am a former Episcopalian, attended The Eppiscopal Seminary of
the Southwest, and dropped out and came out after 2 yrs...later
served 20 years as clergy in the UFMCC...now assistant Rector to
Fr. Paul Breton at St. Aelredd's Sarum Episcopal Chapel in San
Bernardino, CA. Have heard of you for years, and wanted to say,
"Hi!" I am deeply distressed at the Lambeth decision...maybe
there is a wider acceptance of Lesbigays in N. America, but I see
the opposition to be qualitatively more virulent...it's so hard
not to hate them back!!! You are right, we must pray for the
haters...If Jesus could grab Saul, and turn him into Paul, then
there's hope for Jerry and Pat and their ilk. God bless you
Louie. Love in Christ, Fr. John Ayres

As a "cradle" Episcopalian and current vestrymen at Old St.
Paul's in Baltimore, I think these days since Lambeth have been
the saddest I've ever experienced in a church I've known and
loved all my life. For the first time ever, I've begun to ask
myself if continuing to be an active, contributing Episcopalian
is really any longer worth the effort. My prayer is that God will
show us the way to continue on and not leave the church.

Dear Louie,

I have been visiting your site for over a year now. I have
found much encouragement from your site. I recently was
confirmed at Christ Church here. I have searched my entire life
for a place of love and acceptance. You assisted me in my
search. I know that all the negative things from Lambeth will
hurt for sometime, yet when I meet with the people of my parish
I am comforted and loved. We must stay the course and work for
a day when all people are loved and welcomed in the Anglican
Communion.

Peace and Love,

Dan

a sense of what Lambeth is about.

And, strangely, the connection to the Times of London works!

Your page has been a real _life_-line during all the Lambeth

Don't know about your poetry and religious resources
since this is first time we've been with you in a
long time (schedules that don't afford online time).
Would like to know about them. How are you two?? Am
just starting to catch up on Lambeth stuff, don't
know what I would do without your info.

======

Good to hear from you! Have you read Bill Amos's book
on St. Andrew's School? A TIME TO REMEMBER. Quite
interesting.

Has been a busy summer. The new term starts in a week
and we're taking three days to be in New England.

Joy!

Hi Louie!

Rob Rynearson wants me to e-mail Otis Charles for an article
for the Houston/Integrity newsletter on Lambeth. It seems to me
that, since Otis was at Lambeth as a journalist, he must have
written something, but I find nothing by him on your website -
where else would it be? Anyway, pleas let me know if Otis has
written anything before I trouble him with a special request.

Please comment:

Clearly, the question of homosexuality is very, very, important
to you. However, the most important question to ask yourself is
how will I stand before a holy, righteous, and perfect God. Will
it be by my own works or the works done for in Christ? If the
former, than I am god or believe I can be one. If the latter,
than how do I know that this is true?

What I believe: I am a sinner. My righteousness is as filthy
rags (Isaiah). I am a new creation solely by grace through faith
in Christ. Even the pitiful good works I do were prepared for me
ahead of time by Christ so I may not even boast in
those(Ephesians). There is nothing I did to deserve Christ's
sacrifice on the cross but through it I know I am accepted as
God's child and His heir (Romans).

For me that message is a true message of love. Christians spoke
this truth to me. At times I considered them intolerant,
insensitive, pushy and self-righteous. Some of them were. But
their short-comings do not change the truth anymore than being a
bad physicist changes gravity.

I have never questioned anyone's salvation. But I often ask
people if they have asked themselves the above question. Have
you asked yourself that question?

Lambeth Report

Please comment:

It has been very hard to see what pain has come from Lambeth. I know that we are not, as you say, Congregationalists, and as both gay and straight, we need to continue to fight the good fight. Only together can we begin to open eyes that are shut tight from fear and ignorance. What we say that we believe is not faith until it is put to the test, and faith is what this is all about. Continue to be a part of the struggle to de-horrify Christianity, because what you do, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you, is a major piece of faith and prophecy.

Heard a rumor that Integrity's founder was once on the faculty
of UWSP! I'm new to the Music Department and so far finding it a
wonderfully supportive place, although it's a drag to have to
travel for gay culture. Also I unfortunately had to leave my
partner of eight years back in Rochester NY where he is a part-
time seminarian at Bexley Hall. We're both delighted that you
have done so much to further our cause and hope that Lambeth
doesn't have you TOO ticked off.

Cheers!
