Having become informed about the nature of the debate that has 
caused the formation of PERCUSA, Inc., I am reviewing all I can 
on the issues involved.  I am not a flamming fundamentalist; in 
fact, I thought I was a "conservative liberal" (an oxymoron?!)on 
matter of the Church.  Frankly, I have been concerned with 
matters of the SPIRIT, with the Church as holder of truth and 
commitment to the spreading of the GOOD NEWS, and keeper of the 
flame, however faultily or prone to human error.

However, I have drawn the line with Bishop Spong's heresy, i.e., 
the ordination of practicing homosexuals, his view of the 
Bible.  I am still not fully educated on all of his views, but 
it is almost threatening to view his Web Page, books, articles, 
etc.  I suppose it defies my imagination; how can one person 
spread and stand by such "interpretations?"  I know the Church, 
the Christian Community as a whole, needs new and evolving 
spiritual growth and insights.  We all do.  God is not static, 
and He is ever revealing Himself in new and wonderful ways.  
But, I don't see the people who are instruments of these new 
insights being too far off the mark on sticking to the 
fundamental truths that undergird their work.  I believe it is a 
wonderful explosion of the Holy Spirit into the world with the 
Truth that "GOD IS LOVE", and that this love is seen in Christ 
Jesus.  Brennan Manning, in *The Ragimuffin Gospel*, does 
justice to this LOVE of us faulty and error prone and even 
"sinful", if you will, humans.  Bishop Spong and his proponents 
can sing all the day long about myths, corruption being ok, etc. 
but that will not change reality.  And God DOES deal in reality 
and authenticity above all.  

I have recenty joined the PERCUSA, Inc. movement, as it appears 
to be one avenue to aligning myself with those who would hold to 
the Biblical truth.  Again, I am not a fundamentalist.  In fact, 
I do not follow the teachings of hard-core fundamentalists.  
Some of them are as far out as B. Spong...in the other direction.
True balance must enter the picture at some point; I hope we can 
reach it before the Holy Spirit blows His Cool!  

We humans have ravaged and plundered the earth, abused each 
other, hurt children, become addicted to "things"....all sorts 
of wrongdoings.  And we need, most of all, GRACE, GRACE, GRACE.
The Grace to forgive, the grace to redeem our wrongs, the grace 
to be God's Light in a dark and threatening environment of 
today's world.  To me, that is the BOTTOM LINE.  The Grace of 
God through Jesus Christ is the one thing that will not fail 
us.  And accepting the deviant or wrongness of interpretation of 
Scripture is not Grace.  It is adapting to the World's view of 
things.  Bring all the "problem kids" into the church and let 
God shower is justice and mercy on them....now that is true and 
eternal change...not re-inventing the Bible!

So much for a short comment!  God Bless All...and pray for those 
who would hurt other with non-truth.....God can deal with them 
as He chooses.  What patience He must have with all of 
us...while we are yet sinners, He still loves us!!

Louie, thank you for your wonderful birthday greeting. It warms 
the heart. I hope that you are keeping well and that the prayers 
of your many admirers, fans and colleagues (of which I am one) 
strengthen you. I think of you often now, as I am Interim Rector 
of St. Mary's, St. Paul. It was there that I met you. It was my 
first Integrity service and was introduced as the new Chaplain, 
and you were the speaker at the banquet that followed. That was 
in 1978 or so, Advent Sunday I think, and there was a nice crowd. 
I remember your saying how the church would look if suddenly all 
gay/lesbian people were to wake up with purple skin! People still 
don't come out that way in Minnesota, but much has been 
accomplished. Our Bishop has done a really wonderful job with 
placement. And what can I say about our fabulous Canon to the 
Ordinary, Gary Gleason (Board Member of I/TC when I was 
Chaplain)? Much is left to be accomplished, of course. And St. 
Mary's, where I am serving, actually refused to call a most 
energetic and committed priest, Jim Newman, simply because he 
came out during one of the last interviews.

It is now 15 years since I resigned the chaplaincy to be 
succeeded by an out gay chaplain, Ted Neuhaus. He and I had lunch 
yesterday. He is Interim Rector at Epiphany, Plymouth, and doing 
a really superb job. I was not aware of his gifts of 
administration but he has them and it's a good thing because now 
they are being put to use. The treasurer of Integrity/Twin Cities 
in the late 70's was David Buchkowski, and I am having lunch with 
him today. (I may not do very much ministering to, but I am 
getting to be a pretty big boy with all these lunches).

Say Hello to Ernie and please let me know if you're planning to 
be in the Twin Cities anytime. I know some good places to have 
lunch.

Love from your apparently heterosexual friend John Rettger - now, 
(ahem) by the grace of God, the love of the Bishop, the power of 
Dean and Chapter, and a lot of grey hair, CANON John Rettger! But 
still the simple country parson you remember every year with a 
card.

I have enjoyed the wonderful creativity evident  in your web page. I found the corrspondence between Jack Spong and the Archbishop very
helpful in the run up to the Lambeth debate and in the context of
continuing battles with the evangelical Right in the UK (I am an
evangelical). Full marks to Jack for defending this corner and full marks
to you for maintaining this web page. I've found the First Amendment
Studies web page which was helpful. Are there any other useful links on the
same topic ?

I have written to Bishop Spong and spoken to his wife on the telephone. I
am a psychiatrist who has been quite involved with a variety of ethics
issues..euthanasia, abortion..and with healing, the 'Toronto blessing',
charismatic phenomena etc. I come to the States quite frequently (am in
Washington in (April) and passing through Newark so one day I shall drop
off and come and see you all.

I am a ph.d. student at UTDallas, teaching in the rhetoric
