I am really satisfied of your work. It is valuable. Our own bishops do not speak as much of the centeral issues of christian doctrines as you have spoken in your books and articles. They do not tell their own oppinions of how should a modern man think about those doctrines. I have been a pastor since -82 and I am still waiting of their speeches! I hope a New Reformation like bishop Robinson some thirty years ago. After Alvin Reines, Gerd Lüdemann, Don Cupitt, Hans Küng and many others in addition to your thoughts my own thinking is waiting a post-modern Reformation. I think it is happening all the time within the main denominations, but the changes are so slow. Most of my collegues are still living theologically in the past world, I think. But it is my luck that there is Internet! May I say thank you Jack! Happy New year 1998. ( )Computer Materials ( )Course/Class Materials ( )Lesbigay Issues ( )Poetry Resources ( )Religious Resources Other: Please comment: One has to question the itegrity (to use a word that seems to have been taken over unfairly) of Bishop Spong and his fellow-travelers who attack those who disagree with them. His language is abusive toward the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of the Southern Cone of the Americas, those who signed the Kuala-Lumpur Statement, and those who signed the Dallas Statement. One can easily see that he does not desire true dialogue. He even brings up women's "ordination" in all of this, and attacks the four Bishops of the American Church who do not ordain them, even though in 1979 those Bishops were guarranteed that they would not be persecuted, and as recently as this decade the Presiding Bishop said that "there is still a place in the Church for those who disagree with women's 'ordination'." Apparently, as of last July, that does not include those four Bishops, who are now being ordered to "ordain" women, whom they believe cannot be ordained. Interesting, the logic of Bishop Spong, the former Presiding Bishop, and the so-called female bishopesses and priestesses. Don't you think? I look forward to Lambeth, in the hopes that the Episcopal Church will be excommunicated from the Anglican Communion. It will be about time. And now, Bishop Spong says that "those four Bishops refuse to ordain women in spite of the canons of the Church." As I recall, the canons of the Church were violated in 1974 when the Philidelphia Eleven were "ordained" by some Bishops in violation of the canons at the time which forbade females from being ordained. Interesting logic, Your Excellency! Do, tell us more on the subject if you please. The Bishop in wisdom also says that soon the vote will go to justify same-sex unions in the Episcopal Church. Last time I checked, the Church was not a democracy. But, even if it was, one would think that the opinions of the members of the Church (shrinking in numbers though they are) would count, and reliable polls conducted by Episcopalians United and other organizations have shown that a good 86% of communicants oppose the ordination of practicing homosexuals to the Priesthood and the marriage of homosexual persons. Interesting, the Bishop's view of democracy! Of course, the Church is not a democracy, but rather, a monarchy, under the reign of Christ the King. One would think that a Bishop would know this, but then, God only knows what they teach them in seminary these days. At any rate, I do hope, in the interests of impartiality, you will post this, but I will not be surprised if you do not. Oh, do feel free to write back, if you would like. I would welcome the refreshing debate. The fresh air of orthodoxy, and teaching it, is invigorating. Jamison E. It seems to me that when we go to whatever Christian Church, we are all sinners in one way or another. I do not agree with approving one class of sinner above another. The church has no right to judge sinners...we should leave that to God. The church can only teach from the writings and thousands of years of experience of its members. We have one hope for salvation...and that is not in this life. I am still pushing for an Episcopal Hymnal for the Internet. The other denominations have theirs. But we own Sir Arthur Sullivan with Onward Christian Soldiers. As the smut brokers have always promoted their goods, we have the obligation to offer alternatives. Sprong most interesting. I was deeply saddened at the tone of the Archbishops response, and felt that it left very little room for debate. Bp. Sprong's view is timely and relevant to me as I too was subject to the same rethoric and opinons of the "moral christian tradition" - which made every effort to exclude my entry into the Seminary in the Diocese of Jamaica. I trust that Lambeth will be truly guided by the Holy Spirit to recognise that God's Grace transcends sexuality and that it should override our prejudices and personal biases. What right do we have to exclude someone from expressing his love by offering one's self to serve God in the Priesthood? ------------------------------------------------------ Submit the entry From nongiven@nongiven Sat Feb 28 18:55:28 1998 Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 12:36:30 -0500 From: Christopher Wells To: lcrew@andromeda.rutgers.edu Subject: Red Lev, Alabama Name: Christopher Wells Email: Yr. web site: City: po box 307 Red Level Al. 36474 State: al I heard about or connected to your page via: I spent most of my time with your: Check all that apply. ( )Computer Materials ( )Course/Class Materials (*)Lesbigay Issues ( )Poetry Resources (*)Religious Resources Other: Please comment: Hello Louie - I found your website very interesting. I'm not gay but I went to college in the deep South in the late sixties and early seventies and I'm amazed at how much progress gay liberation has made since my college days. I remember an openly gay guy in a psychology class who had dyed his hair blond, grown and painted his fingernails and showed up for class in hotpants. I secretly admired his courage for insisting on being himself despite the overwhelming approbation for such a choice. I recall that in the early seventies, an attitude of "Well, as long as they don't bother me ...", was considered the heighth of liberalism. I never dreamed that gays would become as visible and as politically powerful as they are now. And the frontrunners of the movement must have been terribly brave people. I'm personally ambivalent about homosexuality. I know that the Bible condemns it and the passages I've read seem pretty explicit in their criticism. I read Mel White's "Stranger At The Gate" and was very moved at the struggles he went through to reach his present state of consciousness, but I was hoping that he might shed some enlightenment on those Bible passages. Unfortunately, he only mentioned one - the one about Sodom and Gomorreah (the hell with the spelling!) - and effectively made his case that God was not condemning gay sex, but rather gay rape. But the other passages are still vexing. I've discussed this matter with gay acquaintences and the prevailing attitude seems to be one of moral relativity, expressed as "I believe the Bible and believe that it's the inspired word of God. But I don't believe what it says about homosexuality." Also, I find that certain religious figures who strongly advocate an accepting attitude regarding homosexuality are often predictably and indiscriminately politically correct, often lacing their rhetoric with assorted "flavor-of-the-month" diatribes against the "heterosexist patriarchy", etc. They seem motivated more by public acceptance than by principle. I guess you've wrestled with these issues more than I have, and I hope you've satisfactorily resolved them. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed your webpage and was inspired by your lonely pursuit of happiness. Regards, Kevin Walsh [Kevin, thank for your kind and thoughtful note. It raises more questions than anyone could appropriately try to answer in the cybermargins of a guest book, but I do want to assure you that yes, I do take the Bible very seriously. The major scriptures regarding lesbigay persons are not the six bible bullets no one even noticed much until the last quarter of a centuty, but instead, the same major Scriptures regarding all others whom God loves: John 3:16 and Jesus's insistence that all the law and the prophets stand or fall on the first two, to love God and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. The moment straight people show even the slightest awareness of what it might mean to love lesbigay people as they love them selves (not to mention, to love lesbigay people as much as God does), most of the other issues radically shift their focus. These commandments are not conditional upon our persuading others to accept our points of view. You might want to look at my article "Loving Those on the Religious Right." I will always have a soft sport in my heart for the Anglican Communion of churches, and sometimes wish I didn't have to leave over moral issues. I do pray that the Evil One will be defeated and that once again the Episcopal Church, and all of Anglicanism, will once again reflect the moral teachings of Jesus Christ and His ancient church. ------------------------------------------------------ Submit the entry From jpayne@black-hole.com Sat Feb 28 18:55:28 1998 Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 17:31:50 -0500 From: john Payne To: lcrew@andromeda.rutgers.edu Subject: Minneapolis, MN Name: john Payne Email: jpayne@black-hole.com Yr. web site: City: Minneapolis State: MN I heard about or connected to your page via: anglicans on line I spent most of my time with your: Check all that apply.
