Louie, I think it's great you do so much on the internet. How
many hours a day do you spend at the computer? I seem to spend a
lot and more reading than sending. Douglas+

ecclesiastical politics

Please comment:

You make the most sense of any Christian since Bill Stringfellow. I hope you knew him. Reading you makes me feel as I did when he used to say, "cheer up; there're twelve Christians in Chicago alone."

Benedicite.

Lutibelle/Louie responds:

You are much too kind. Bill remains very important in my life. When my
bishop summoned me for discipline for disturbing the "peace and good order
of the church" back in 1974, he did so through the Atltanta Constitution,
very upset that my being affirming as a gay Christian had upset my
vestry, who had asked me to leave. Bill Stringfellow spotted the AP or
UPI account and called me on the phone with strong counsel: "First,
don't go to that discipline without a lawyer, and second, if the bishop
or anyone else so much as mentions the term 'excommunication' again,
stand up on the table and say, 'I double-dog dare you.' By the time
that my lawyer and I arrived, the bishop discovered that he had no canon
that even mentioned lay people except those on vestries, and explained that
he had summoned me only in anger. He has long ago repented of that action
and of his part in drafting the 1979 resolution opposing lesbigays as
disrdered persons. "He was merely saying that God loved him as much as God
loves me, and he was right," this same bishop wrote in a document he
circulated at the 1991 General Convention.

It is very important to love our enemies, for the Holy Spirit is determined
to make us all friends.

Joy to you! Thanks for promting an important memory. Do drop in again.

Lutibelle/Louie

Please comment:

I am a candidate for ordination as a permanent deacon (ordination
expected about Easter) and one of my chief interests is working
with the lesbigay community of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Our parish,
Grace, is one of 2 Episcopal churches in the city; ours is the
only one welcoming homosexuals to worship and membership on
committees, commissions, etc.; some have even been baptized and
confirmed and all receive communion. There have been no problems,
but I fear one may crop up in September when our priest blesses
(not marries) a same-sex union with the permission of our bishop.
There are a number who are somewhat bothered by lesbians
worshipping here but have said little; however, I expect the
backlash to be open when word of the blessing comes out. To this
date only the Vestry has been informed. As chair of the parish
pastoral care commission, I am seeking a means of handling this
expected difficulty through love, understanding and prayer. The
commission will not take a pro or con stance; rather, we will
seek to work with both sides in a goal of gaining a Christian
understanding of each.

So far, we have 8 lesbians in our parish; most are active, all
have been welcomed. More are expected and Grace may indeed become
to be known as the gay/lesbian parish of Cedar Rapids. The other
parish, much larger and richer, is also more snootier (their
attitude is if you don't make at least $50,000 a year, don't
bother to enter).

Anyway, I'm glad to discover your site and will visit it often. I
would like information about the "fag" protests at the cathedral.
We may need some help here.

Thanks, and God Bless!

Hi Dr. Crew! I don't know if you remember me, but I took your
"Bible as Literature" class in the Fall of '95 at Rutgers Newark.
I am starting graduate school in September and will be teaching a

course syllabus and to try and get some ideas about how to construct one!
Thanks for your online help......

I hope you're having a nice summer and I look forward to seeing you

Great site Louie. Thanks for your *hard, diligent,

lived in NJ and would attend the Integrity meetings in NYC; at
that time I was a young 20-something and became a member of
Integrity soon after its founding. I've been active in the
Houston chapter over the years (my 21st now in Houston!). Oh,
it's a hard road in this Diocese! Oh my! But I love our Church...

It's nice to finally "meet" you. The last time I saw him, I told Frank Griswold you were wonderful (this was before I read your review of him--though, honestly, I doubt I would have been more tactful had I known). He smiled and said you were quite a guy. Had I just been schmoozed??? We'll have to devise an "Art of Schmoozing" page if he's elected! I like the man, but I always have to think twice after we've talked and use my intuition--was this just polite agreement or was I getting an honest reaction? I use visual cues (how harried does he look; is he really paying attention] and the context--getting him on the rebound (ahem) is always best, don't you think? Anyway, onward, as Mort Sahl used to say.
I hope (almost against home) that by the time you read this, the Church will finally have agreed to unprejudiced ordinations, that the most liberal bishop will have won, and that the most conservative will have finally moved to the Southern Baptists where they belong. Perhaps they can create their own theme park! However, as my mother used to say, "If wishes were fishes, we'd all have a few." I don't expect much. I'm just happy you will be there for us.
Have to go now. Will write more soon--there's so much I want to ask you !
                       Love--
                             S. (and love from Hopkins, too)

Dear Louie,

It's ludicrous that we haven't met in all this time, but we've never been in the same place at the same time, except perhaps on the Internet. Have just finished teaching a week-long class in lesbigay spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union, and will be co-teaching a similar, semester-long class with Bill Countryman this fall at CDSP.

Could not make it to General Convention this year (grad school budget and serving non-stipe at St. Gregory of Nyssa in S.F.) and probably will not make it to the east coast till late next year, but we will connect some time, I know!

Oh, I checked the "Computer Resrouces" box because I am one of the computer obsessed (used to work for Peter Norton Computing before I toddled off to seminary).

I know, this is not a comment, it is a letter.

God's peace to you,

M.R.

Greetings,

I'm glad to see that you're still going strong and making the philistines quake in their boots.
Australia in a wonderful place but has most of the same problems as the U. S.
Anglicans here are fighting the same battles. I'm trying to convince them
that the old ways of being church don't work. Some are getting the message.

Louie,
I thought you'd like to know that the Diocese of Chicago has finally dipped a toe into the information age and opened a web site. I don't know if they know you exist, but you might want to add them to your index. [Especially since there is finally one, count them 1, diocesan officer down at St. James with a link on it to a email address. They are at:
http://www.swts.nwu.edu/dio_chicago/index.html

Take care. Thanks for the wealth of info on all aspects of the GC.
Janet Bein

[Thanks. I have added it to my collection at
