Mr. Crew,
Thank you for a wonderful web resource. I had a suspicion you
would have some sort of report or forecast for the PB election.
It is wonderful and entertaining reading.

FYI Don Wimberly is my former bishop who sent me to seminary at
VTS. While you two may be in disagreement on certain matters he
is a solid person who is committed to our Lord and our church.
He is the finest bishop I know and would have my vote were I able
to so.

Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Jonathon Jensen

Looking up family name on Interet

Please comment:

Hi. From your name we are wondering if you are any relation to us. If
you have the time, please try to search to see if we are . You seem to
have led a very interesting life. We would like to hear from you . Well,
goodbye for now. Matt and Carol Crew.

Louie Crew responds:

My father wrote a book called THE CREW GENERATIONS, and a distant cousin
has updated it: Mr. Keith Hinson, 1328 Monticello Ave., Birmingham, AL
35210, tele. 205-956-9528 h; 205-956-3393 w; 205-956-3977 fax. I believe
he may be able to provide you with a copy at cost for reproduction. It is
also available with my father's papers through the State Archives, State
of Alabama, Montgomery, Alabama.

From fuzzy memory: Our family was first in the 1640 census in or near
Richmond, Virginia. They were Quakers. MY great-great...grandfather was
kicked out of the Quakers for mustering in the War of 1812. They moved
into Georgia and later into Alabama, soon after Jackson opened up Alabama
in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. They were mainly merchants in small
towns. At one point they established Crewsville, Alabama, but it was
merely a cornfield when my father took me to the site in my early
childhood (I was born 1936). My father was born in Goodwater, Alabama in
Coosa County, as was his father. His grandfather, John S. Crew, was a
private for Coosa County in the Civil War. I was born in Anniston,
Alabama (Calhoun County)..... I hope some of this helps you.

Dear Louie,
This is my first visit to a Web page. I'm a real novice. My brother, John Larson of Pittsburgh, PA, has been forwarding mail on lesbigay issues for about a year. I also am a life long Episcopalian and have attended a traditional church in Camden, ME si

nce 1981. This fall I transferred my membership to St Peter's in Rockland and am being renewed and nourished in that loving community. It has been a long struggle during which my confidence in the ECUSA has been tested. I believe you know the new pries

t at St. Peter's: Ralph Moore. Since he is not yet hooked into the internet, I have been printing some of the mail John forwards to me for him. I have several lesbian and gay friends at work and we are grateful for your leadership and clear thinking com

mentary. Since I truly am exploring, I must admit that I have started at the end and am writing this note before exploring your web page. I will go back but am always uncertain about what happens when I press various keys.!
I'm learning by trial and error. My husband and I were both fairly active in the Maine Won't Discriminate Campaign and we are gearing up for the latest challenge by Concerned Maine Families and the legislation that has just been proposed for gay rights

in Maine. It's nice to meet you. Best regards and Peace, Martha (Marty) Rogers 2/24/97

I can't thank you enough for the information that you have
published on the net. I belong to NEAC and Integrity, having
joined both just this past year. I am a member of St. John's
Episcopal Church in Odessa, Texas. We have had a very trying
time over the past 5 years regarding Priests and divisions. We
now have 2 churches in Odessa. St. John's, a parish, and St.
Barnabas, a mission. We now both have Priests, and ours is a
fantastic lady from Des Moines, Iowa, The Rev. Laura Sellner.
She is great. Your home page and your Anglican Page are one of
the best sites I have found on the Web. Your writings and
updates are very interesting and informative. I have discovered
a gold mine of information regarding lesgaybitrans in the Church.
Living way out west in West Texas, I feel that I am in a desert,
not only as far as the climate is concerned, but for information
and people to be with and talk to in reference to the Church and
where it is going on the lbgt issues. Rev. Sellner is very
supportative and helped me make arrangements to make the trip to
Washington, D.C., for the NEAC retreat and the showing of the
quilt last October. Again, thank you for all of the information
and inlightenment on lgbt issues and your interesting posts to
luti. I shall visit your pages more often now that I have
finally made it her. Sorry this is so long, but I just had to
let you know that there are a few "odd" people alive and well in
desolate parts of the country. By the way, I am in the Diocese
of NorthWest Texas, and we are not as weired as Forth Worth and
Dallas. Also, we have just elected a new Bishop, or shoud I say
Bishop Co-Adjuter who will be seated in June 1997, and assume the
See in August. He is Wallis Ohl, at present, the Rector of St.
Michaels in Colorado Springs, CO. I would appreciate any
information you might be able to give me on his stand on Gay and
Lesbian ordinations and/or same-sex blessings. My email address
is: lblair@apex2000.net. Again, thank you for taking time out
of your busy schedule to read this and for all you input to the
Episcopal Church and Lightspeed and Integrity.

Dear Louie...As I said in my communication earlier today. I am a
neophyte on the network. Found your page now while "playing
around" this evening. Is there a category for the newest
news/gossip in the church-at-large?

News from the Seminary of the Southwest over last weekend was
that a short list of PB nominees is circulating: White,
Griswold, Warner, Rowley, Wimberly. While reading GOEs I heard
Shimpfky. Another source says Lee withdrew and yet another says
White has withdrawn.

This is all probably gossip and maybe you only puts FACTS on your
website?

'Tany rate, I'm glad I found you and hope I can remember how I
did it tomorrow!

PEACE!

Dixie

Dear Louie Crew,

I found your web page last night, and have had a chance to
browse through some of the links. I was appreciative of
the comprehensiveness of the reports of the ³Long Island
Affair² which has had some Church press coverage here in
Australia as well as the Collect at the end. I am not
exactly certain whose work that is. Tonight I read the
article: ³The morning after² and again was much moved by
the sentiments expressed. Quite some time ago I found
that the Oxford dictionary defines ³catholic² as ³embracing
all², which I like.

Please excuse my presumption. You may or may not care to
read the following sermon I preached some time ago. I
think the crunch paragraph is the 11th - it begins: ³Again
I refer to that article in the Adelaide Advertiser...² I
hope that it is helpful and supportive to you.

With every blessing.

		Christopher Heath.

s058g^96 Somerton Park & Geocities 22/9/96 Sunday 25

³Are you envious because I am generous?² Matthew 20.15

This is a wonderful parable for it tells us all about God
and all about ourselves. I last preached on this passage
at the Gawler Deanery MU festival at Elizabeth Downs last
month.

I said this is a wonderful parable. It tells me three
wonderful things about God.

The first wonderful thing about God is that he spends his
time out and about looking for people, and looking for
people to make their contribution to the kingdom. This
truth is reflected in the whole of the Bible story - from
Genesis when God is seen walking in the garden in the cool
of the evening, looking for Adam and Eve - to Jesus who
spent his ministry going from town to town, empty handed
and accepting the hospitality of those who offered it. So
the landowner of the parable goes out early, then at nine,
later at noon and three oıclock, and finally at five.
Everyone who was there were hired to work. God ³spends
his time² looking for us, so that each of us can make our
own unique contribution to his kingdom.

The second wonderful thing about God is that he overlooks
the lies. One can sense a certain degree of frustration
on the part of the landowner when he finds labourers at the
marketplace idle at five oıclock. ³Why are you standing
here idle all day?² he asks. They lamely reply with the
lie: ³Because no one has hired us.² This is a lie - had
they actually been there at any of the four previous
occasions the landowner had come - they would have been
hired. The truth therefore is that they werenıt there
before, a truth the landowner well knew. But the
landowner doesnıt point out their sin or worry about the
lie; he doesnıt even challenge the statement. The task is
too urgent to be worried about whether they ³repent² or
not. The task is for these also to make their own unique
contribution to the kingdom, that is the first and only
priority. How often does the Church consider its first
priority is to get people to repent?

The third wonderful thing about God is that God provides
for our daily needs. Some translations name the coin the
denarius; our translation calls it the usual daily wage.
When Philip says to Jesus 200 denarii would hardly buy
sufficient to feed the 5000, he is pretty close here. A
family of 5 for three meals a day is fed by 1 denarius.
So one denarius = 15 meals - so 200 denarii = 3000 meals.
Of course the denarius for the family might have to provide
clothing and other expenses not needed in the one-off
feast. So when we say that core petition in the Lordıs
Prayer: ³Give us this day our daily bread² it needs to be
tempered with the realisation that God does, whether we ask
or not. Those coming first to the paymaster didnıt expect
to receive the usual daily wage, nor did they ask for it.
God gives us that which we need, if we ask him or if we
donıt. God gives us (despite the theologies of some
people) even when we pray but dare not expect our prayer to
be answered.

As I said at the beginning the parable also tells us about
ourselves, and this is of course rather different from God.

As the paymaster got up to those who had worked the whole
day we are told that ³they thought they might receive
more². Perhaps two denarii, or even three. I must admit
I am not a gambler, but I do have an easy pick in some of
the megadraws of cross- lotto. Now I really donıt have to
tell you what would happen if I actually won a major prize.
There is that old Australian phrase - ³You wouldnıt see me
for dust!² Of course I would use some of the proceeds
for doing something towards Godıs kingdom - perhaps a house
for refugees...

So we donıt have to wrack our brains to discover what the
grumbler wanted. He actually didnıt want to have to come
to work in the vineyard tomorrow, or perhaps even have a
couple of days off had the person been given three denarii
... But the task is too urgent, God doesnıt want us to
delay making our own unique contributions, for it is here
that we find our sense of personal fulfilment.

For all I would love to be my own boss and do my own thing,
it is only now after nearly twenty years in active parish
ministry that I am now clearly saying what I meant to say
when I started!

The second thing we learn about humanity is revealed too.
When the last workers arrived at the paymaster, if they
werenıt to receive more than the first, then they grumbled
that those who worked only the one hour should receive
less. Let us be quite clear, the denarius could be split
up into coins of smaller denominations. I think a silver
denarius was worth 64 widowıs mites, so the paymaster could
have easily paid them by the hour. But of course the
result of this is that they wouldnıt be able to afford to
live and feed themselves and their families! Those who
had worked all day didnıt care. Let them starve - let
them be cast out into the street and beg! They donıt live
up to our expectations, why should we care? We wouldnıt
do that would we?

Again I refer to that article in the Adelaide Advertiser of
August the 9th - that article where it reported those
Christians who are lobbying the Federal government to
discriminate against the homosexual community in such areas
as employment and rental housing ... These people do not
live up to our expectations - they are not worth employing
- they can starve, they and their loved ones. They are
not worth even a roof over their head - they can be out on
the streets begging - thatıs all they deserve! This, in
the name of Christ???

This is a wonderful parable, for it tells us the sort of
God we have - someone who is ever out urgently looking for
us and for all to enter his vineyard, no questions asked,
all will be provided for. God is generous. It tells us
that if we as the Church are proclaiming a God different
from this, we have some looking to do ourselves. It tells
us that people are our first priority, not our expectations
of them.

It encourages us to make our own contribution to Godıs
kingdom and to allow others to make their contribution
also.

There are three final comments I would make. Firstly the
workers grumble at the landowner. We might expect that
the landowner, being God, might strike them dead or refuse
to employ them the following day. How frequently do we
complain that God hasnıt ordered the universe in the way we
think it should be - particularly when we think someone
else has got more than they should have? Is not this the
same reason Jesus was nailed to the cross?

The second is to reinforce the urgency of the mission to
encourage all people whoever they are to make their
contribution. God goes out again and again seeking people
- not people to convert, not to get them to repent, not to
get them to believe, but to solicit and accept the unique
contribution they have to make to the kingdom. It is
urgent. It is too easy to be distracted.

The final comment is one of those distractions. In the
latest issue of the Adelaide Church Guardian (September
page 4), it is reported that Dr Feliciano Carino, general
secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia, in a report
with the headline ³Ecumenism loses its sparkle², believes
churches have lost their ³ecumenical enthusiasm². It
causes me to ponder if the Churches have been distracted
from this primary message of this parable. Let us forget
about repentance, even forget about faith if that means
even one is person turned away. Ecumenism, I have no
doubt, leads us to look at other Christians with eyes to
see that they have a legitimate contribution to make to
Godıs kingdom, and this is very positive and good. It
seems to me however that Jesus went about with eyes to see
the good in a rather wider group of people than just the
religious of his society. He went to all sorts and
conditions of people and he sat down and ate with them.

The excellent sociological data on the Episcopal Church

Please comment:

My wife Judy McKay and I are rather recent dual order clergy in
the Episcopal Church. After long careers in the Presbyterian
Church finishing up as Presbytery Executives, we started helping
in the Episcopal Church in the little town of Hailey, Idaho and
the Bishop stretched Canon 10 to give us dual ordination. For
health reasons we have since retired. But we still are learning
about the Episcopal Church and I found your pages very helpful in
understanding some of the dynamics of the denomination. I have
seen your name on Ecunet. I have been following the
Episcopal-Presbyterian dialog as well as Concordat and Formula of
Agreement. I am fascinated by the social, cultural and
psychological differences I see between my denominations. Keep up
the good work. Peace, John

Louie: Just ran across your web site surfing and discovered the Birthday Calender of Bishops. I think you're
the only one providing such a service now that BRF and AFP are no longer
doing it. Thanks! I just printed one copy for my own prayers. Would you
like a copy mailed to you. I don't plan to distribute it further. Let me
know. And have a holy Lent! +CCE

[Freely copy; no need to send one to me. Enjoy! How good to hear from
you. Please greet Willa for me when you see her. I look forward to seeing
you in Philadelphia. Lutibelle/Louie]

Hi Louie,

It's Flo again. I read your comment. Thanks for the
encouragement both then and the other night when I called you.
It must have been the anniversary of the night I called you 30
years ago when I was a freshman in your English class. I guess
I have a need to drag you out of bed every 30 years or so.

I am still looking for a job. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama
is supposed to pay my way for an interview in B'ham. So, I am
cramming on COBOL. I have taken it but many moons ago.

Tell Ernie I said Hi.

By the way, I saw a good movie. It's called "SHINE". See ya'

Flo

I've just started surfing the net, and am having fun searching
for anything I can think about. Not expecting to find anything, I
did a search for "Black River Review." (I'm the co-editor.) I
never knew Li Min Hua was a pen name. It's great to find out
about what a multi-talented person you are.

You may remember we were going to make a t-shirt from your poem,
It never happened. The staff member who kept saying he'd do it
never got around to it. He is no longer a staff member.

If anybody reading your guest book (you included, of course) is
interested in submitting to Black River Review, I'll be glad to
e-mail our guidelines. We read between Jan.1 & May 1. We don't
take e-mail submissions.

I'm going to look into more of your site later when I have more
uninterrupted time. Feel free to edit this comment if it's too
long.
                     Kaye

[Louie responds:

What fun to have you sign my guest book and share your surprise at
learning that Li Min Hua and Louie Crew (and several others) are all the
same. At this point, I have written 207 publications as Li Min Hua,
17.8% of my 1,161 publications at the end of 1996. (Marion Evans and
Eric Blair, eat your heart out!)

Joy to you! Thanks for your many services to writers and to literature.

Lutibelle/Louie
