( )Computer Materials ( )Course/Class Materials ( )Lesbigay Issues ( )Poetry Resources (*)Religious Resources Other: Please comment: dear blessed louie... well, i got back from my round the world sabbatical in august (china, japan, hong kong, thailand, india, egypt,turkey, greece, france, england)...since that time, i have been keeping my noise to the grindstone. i wonder whether you have access to the "top attendance on sunday" churches in america. arlen rothage says that is the only number that counts for much. oftentimes, big churches are merely ones that have never bothered to purge their membership of "dead w ood". hey, what can i say, i probably think my church would qualify somewhere in that categoryu. we have about 425 on a sunday and about 600 per week (that includes weddings, funerals, bar mitzvas, etc). we grew by a remarkable 30% this past year (i think i ought to do them another favor and take another sabbatical). and we do not pander to the scary stuff that dominates the current religious community. we are just a happy little 1950's-60's episcopal church like you and i grew up with. keep up the great work... best love, jim sell [I do have access to attendance figures for my diocese, but publishers of the Red Book have not chosen to use those for national reports; nor do we get salaries anymore, the way we used to. You might want to look at the parochial reports which I have prepared for every parish in the Diocese of Newark. I wish we could get the national church to take on this kind of mission strategy. The stud book is not enough!

I found your page through a local Episopal Information Network Web site which, coincidentally, is on the same ISP I use. Though straight, I have many gay friends and lived most of my life in Georgia. BTW - your bio page says you and your spouse live in a rural town in central Georgia, yet your home page says you teach at Rutgers. We have a terribly reactionary bishop in the Diocese of the Rio Grande and I'm afraid many gays and lesbians are scared off. With the untimely demise of my hard disk, I've had to reinstall many programs, not the least of which is Netscape, so I'm updating/restoring Bookmarks. In two days (1/4/97) Dick Chang will be ordained the 10th Bishop of the Hawaiian Islands (the first having been sent in 1862 by Queen Victoria), and it will be nice to have a Bishop around the House again.
