Note: Most clergy names link to A Directory of Black Clergy where you can find more complete information on the person. Caveat: I commit to update the directory continually as new information comes to my attention, and I welcome additions and corrections. However, the report which you are now viewing, with its summary of the data, purports to be accurate only as of the date prepared using the data specified.

Only 596 (3.06%) of the 17,500 persons listed in The 2001 Clerical Directory are black. The Clerical Directory does not indicate the race of persons. I used The Directory of Black Clergy. (1992, 1998, and 2002-2004 editions) to find the names of clergy who have identified themselves as black, as well as data provided by a wide variety of other networks.

Black priests are in charge at only 2.1% of ECUSA's 7,347 domestic congregations. Those congregations have a total of 46,400 communicants (2.5% of the communicants of the Episcopal Church in the domestic dioceses).

The laity:

This graph is based on data found in A Report on Episcopal Church in the United States Prepared by C. Kirk Hadaway for the Office of Congregational Development of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church, April 2002.

More black ECUSA Priests and Bishops than Black Roman Catholic Priests and Bishops

Tom McCann reported in the Chicago Tribune for September 2, 2002 that the Roman Catholic Church "has 13 black bishops and 350 black Catholic priests in the United States"! Compare that with the 600 black priests and 24 black bishops in the Episcopal Church. There are about 60 million Roman Catholics in the United States and only 2.4 million Episcopalians.

Note: Many for the earlier years have died and thus do not show up in this graph.

Click here to see the graph of ordinations by gender over the same period.

The Given the likelihood of deaths of the ordinands from earlier more than from recent years, we may actually have had a decrease in ordinations of black clergy over this half century.

indicates one of the 11 states of the Confederacy. All 11 are in the 17 states with the worst record of deployment of Black priests in charge of Episcopal congregations. Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan and Missouri also hold that unenviable distinction.

Note, in the table I have used the population totals for The Diocese of Washington, instead of for the District alonge. The diocese is made up of the District of Columbia and four Maryland Counties. It was carved out of the Diocese of Maryland in the 1890s. Population figures and percentages are from the census for 2000.

U.S. Population for the Diocese of Washington
Jurisdiction  Population  White  Black
District of Columbia  572,059  176,194  343,235
Prince George County  805,515  217,489  505,058
Montgomery County  873,341  565,925  131,874
Charles County  120,546  82,574  31,463
St. Mary's County  86,211  70,348  11,983
Totals  2,457,672  1,112,530  1,023,614

Thus. in the Diocese of Washington, blacks are 41.6% of the population and on 8.3% of the clergy in charge, or a difference of -33.3%

The table uses the population totals for Maryland excluding the four Maryland counties computed as part of the Diocese of Washington.

I regret that I do not have U.S. population data for dioceses in states with more than one diocese, nor do I have data regarding black communicants. A church that cares about persons will make every effort to find them. I am disappointed that we have not yet even thought it important to count those whom we are excluding or deploying unequally.

The strong black presence in the House of Bishops will not hold if blacks are not nominated. Only 8 blacks (4.9%) were among the 162 runners up in 31 episcopal elections between January 1, 1995 and June 6, 1998.

About This Report

I add or revise the entries for individual priests in my Directory of ECUSA's black clergy as I receive the information. Most names in the report above link to that Directory. I do not revise the report itself on a regular basis. The current report was prepared in September 2002, the first complete revision since 1998. Hence, someone may show up in this report as a vicar, or as a rector of a parish of 200-300, but her or his entry in the directory may show a change in job or a change in the size of the parish.

To create this report, I first collected the names of black ECUSA clergy, using old directories of the Union of Black Episcopalians, directories provided by the Black Ministries of the Episcopal Church, word-of-mouth identifications, and any other sources that I could find.

I gathered deployment information from diocesan websites, The Episcopal Church Annual, correspondence with the individuals themselves, Google searches and any other source I could find.

I gathered biographical information from the 2000 Clerical Directory (NYC: Church Publishing Co., 2001).  I used both the electronic copy on CD and the hard copy. I broke the code on the earlier electronic version for 1998, to enable comparisons across fields and to enable the use of mathematical formulas. The crippled commercial version is nevertheless enormously useful, and I highly recommend it. For ordering information, call 800-223-6602 or write to Church Publishing Co., 445 Fifth Avenue, NYC, NY 10016. The version online withholds much of the data in the hard copy and in the CD rom version

Undocumented clergy

Many clergy never show up in the Clerical Directory at all because they work outside the coverage of the Church Pension Fund. My friend Linda Curtiss lcurtiss@cpg.org at the CPF refers to these as "clergy in Limbo," and is interested in documenting those who want to be documented.

Additionally, some black clergy have not yet come to the notice of the Desk on Black Ministries at the Episcopal Church Center, overseen by The Rev. Lynn Collins, Laclmc@aol.com or to the attention of The Rev. Benjamin Musoke-Lubega bmusoke-lubega@episcopalchurch.org, ECUSA's Officer for Africa. Any ECUSA clergy person who wants to be added to their lists should contact them. I would appreciate notice if you wish to be added to my lists as well, lcrew@newark.rutgers.edu

Joy through you to absolutely everyone!
