General Interest Meeting: Dec. 4, 2009 @ noon, 25 Bishop Place, CAC

What is it?

The Gradfund Proposal Writing Workgroup offers a supportive interdisciplinary environment for doctoral students with a defined dissertation topic to meet periodically to discuss the mechanics of applying for external funding, strategies for putting together a competitive application, and the opportunity to draft proposals and receive peer review in a collegial environment.

What will I get out of it?

The goal of the workgroup is the help graduate students prepare their funding proposals well in advance of the Fall 2010 deadline season. We also seek to create a proposal writing community in which the workgroup participants may continue to engage independently over the summer and into the fall semester.

What’s the time commitment?

Workgroup participants should be prepared to complete preparatory work and to attend the scheduled workgroup meetings. The workgroup will meet twice a month from January to May of 2010. Each group meeting will run approximately 3 hours, and will require approximately 1-2 hours of preparatory work. The meeting schedule will be determined after the initial general interest meeting to be held on Friday, December 4 at 12:00 noon at 25 Bishop Place, CAC

The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.
The 2010 application is now open and will close December 8, 2009. Application instructions are available online at www.nsfsi.org. For further information concerning benefits, eligibility, and tips on applying, applicants are encouraged to visit www.nsf.gov/eapsi or www.nsfsi.org.

NSF recognizes the importance of enabling U.S. researchers and educators to advance their work through international collaborations and the value of ensuring that future generations of U.S. scientists and engineers gain professional experience beyond this nation's borders early in their careers. The program is intended for U.S. graduate students pursuing studies in fields supported by the National Science Foundation. Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply for the EAPSI. Applicants must be enrolled in a research-oriented master's or PhD program and be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents by the application deadline date. Students in combined bachelor/master degree programs must have matriculated from the undergraduate degree program at time of application.

The first Summer Institutes began in Japan in 1990, and to date approximately 1,800 U.S. graduate students have participated in the program. For the 2009 competition, NSF received 317 applications and issued 187 awards. EAPSI applicants are representative of most U.S. states and territories. The 2009 awardees pool included representation from 95 universities and 40 states.

The NSF-EAPSI Operations Center is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (www.asee.org/fellowships).[

Should you inquire additional information, please contact Mr. Ergys Ramaj by email at eapsi@asee.org or by phone at 1-866-501-2922.

noreply@blogger.com (Teresa M. IDRF accepts applications for research that is situated in a specific discipline and geographical region and is informed by interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives, as well as research on multiple countries and/or multiple world regions. While proposals may cover all periods in history, they must demonstrate relevance to contemporary issues and debates.

Eligibility

The program is open to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences - regardless of citizenship - enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States. Applicants must complete all Ph.D. requirements except on-site research by the time the fellowship begins. Proposals that identify the U.S. as a case for comparative inquiry are welcome; however, proposals which focus predominantly or exclusively on the United States are not eligible.

Fellowship Terms

The IDRF program provides support for nine to twelve months of continuous dissertation research outside of the United States. Seventy-five fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $18,750. The fellowship includes participation in an interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.

Apply Online

For more detailed information and to apply, visit the IDRF website.

The IDRF Program is administered by the Social Science Research Council in consultation with the American Council of Learned Societies and funding provided by the Andrew W. Paper applications will not be accepted for submissions on or after the August 8 transition. Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) for F-series programs have been updated and will also be announced in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. For a complete listing of Fellowship FOAs, see the F-Kiosk: http://grants1.nih.gov/training/F_files_nrsa.htm.
Several new business processes are being implemented concurrent with the transition to electronic submission:

1. Reference Letters: The electronic submission of reference letters is separate from the electronic submission of applications.Reference letters are submitted directly through the eRA Commons and do not use Grants.gov. Therefore, fellowship applicants must follow the Reference Letter Instructions in the SF424 (R&R) Individual Fellowship Application Guide for specific directions (Part 1, Section 5.4). Letters of reference are an important component of the application for fellowship support. Applicants must arrange to have at least three (but no more than five) letters of reference submitted on their behalf to the eRA Commons Web site at: https://commons.era.nih.gov/commons/reference/submitRefereeInformation.jsp.

2. Resubmissions: Applicants may submit a resubmission application, but such application must include an Introduction addressing the previous peer review critique (Summary Statement). See new NIH policy on resubmission (amended) applications (NOT-OD-09-003, NOT-OD-09-016). Please note that when resubmitting an application electronically via Grants.gov, applicants must also resubmit their letters of reference through the eRA Commons as described above.

3. Review Criteria: Reviewers will provide an overall impact/priority score, and will consider each of the five criteria below in determining scientific and technical merit and will give a separate score for each:

Fellowship Applicant

Sponsor(s), Collaborator(s), and Consultant(s)

Research Training Plan

Training Potential

Institutional Environment and Commitment to Training

Inquiries

Questions concerning this notice should be directed to:

Office of Extramural Programs
Office of Extramural Research
National Institutes of Health
Phone: 301-451-4225
Email: nihtrain@mail.nih.gov

noreply@blogger.com (Teresa M.
