Workshop on Proposal Writing Basics: January 29, 2010, 1-3pm

On Friday, January 29, 2010 we will offer a workshop on Proposal Writing Basics from 1:00-3:00pm.

The workshop will be held in Center Hall in the Busch Campus Center on Busch Campus.

The workshop will provide an overview of proposal writing. We will cover the basic elements that go into a successful funding proposal.  This lecture-based workshop will guide the participants through all the essential components that go into a successful proposal for external funding. The workshop will also provide an introduction to GradFund services and how to identify research grants and fellowships to support graduate students.

Registration is not required to attend.

Proposal Writing Workshop--January 14, 2009

Workshop Date and Time: January 14, 2010, 9:00-5:00

Workshop Location: Douglas Campus Center , Meeting Room A, Douglas Campus

Workshop Description: This workshop is designed for the doctoral student who plans to apply for external funding in the Spring or Fall 2010 semesters to support dissertation work (research and/or writing) during the 2010-2011 or 2011-2012 academic years. The workshop will take the student through the mechanics of writing a strong proposal for external funding.

The workshop runs for a full day and requires prep work to be completed in advance of the workshop.

To participate in the workshop, each registered participant must complete and submit by 9:00am on Thursday, January 7, 2010 either our Proposal Writing Workbook (which is available on the Fellowship Guide Sakai site) or a proposal written for a specific funding competition. Participants should be prepared to draft a funding proposal based on their proposed dissertation research. The workshop activities will include lecture, group discussions, group exercises and review and critique sessions. The work you produce for the workshop will be discussed and critiqued by the group.

Mock Review Sessions

During the month of October, we will offer a series of Mock Review Sessions for student who would like to participate in a mock review panel and have their funding proposal reviewed and critiqued by their peers.

Mock Review Sessions--October 2009

October 23, 2009, 11am-2pm, 25 Bishop Place, room 301, CAC (We will work through the lunch hour, please plan to bring your lunch with you, soft drinks will be provided) (draft due 9am on October 16, 2009)
October 30, 2009, 9am-12pm, 18 Bishop Place, Basement Conference Room, CAC (draft due 9am on October 23, 2009)

Pre-registration is required to participate in a Mock Review session. To register, please send an email to gradfund@rci.rutgers.edu with the date of the session you would like to attend. To participate in the review session, your proposal draft and the url to the guidelines of your funder should be emailed to gradfund@rci.rutgers.edu by 9:00am on the date indicated in parentheses next to the review session listed above.

Proposal Writing Workgroup--Spring 2009

Registration is now open to join the Spring 2009 Proposal Writing Workgroup

The Resource Center for Graduate Student External Support’s Proposal Writing Workgroup will meet on Thursday afternoons (1:30-4:30) throughout the Spring 2009 semester. The goal of the workgroup is to help doctoral students prepare their funding proposals well in advance of the Fall 2009 deadline season.


To participate in the Proposal Writing Workgroup, you should have a dissertation topic that is developed sufficiently enough so you will be able to begin to write a draft proposal and to fully participate in this intensive proposal development experience. Participating in the Workgroup will require a considerable time commitment on your part. Please do not register to participate unless you are confident you will have ample time to dedicate to the writing process.


In order for the Workgroup experience to be successful, all participants are expected to commit to completing the pre-meeting exercises and to attending and actively participating in all scheduled meetings.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register for the workgroup, send an email to: gradfund@rci.rutgers.edu.

Once you have registered, you will be given access to the 2009 Proposal Writing Workgroup Sakai site. Once you have access, please visit the site, and follow the instructions posted on the site to confirm your participation.

Brown Bag Mock Proposal Review Session

We will be hosting a Brown Bag Mock Proposal Review Sessions on December 12th (12:00-4:30pm)


The mock proposal review session is open to graduate students applying for external funding and who at the time of the review session will have a near final draft of their proposal.

In the review session, you will have the opportunity to gain insight into a typical review process as well as have your proposal reviewed by one of your peers.

To participate, registration is required.

Visit by SSRC Program Officer Dr. Camille Peretz on October 15, 2008

On October 15th at 2pm, Dr. Camille Peretz, Program Officer for the Social Science Research Council's Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship Program will speak about the SSRC fellowship and grant programs available to graduate student.

The SSRC offers many important fellowships and grants to support graduate student research. Plan to attend this talk if you are currently preparing an SSRC application or plan to in the next year or two.

The presentation will take place in the Teleconference Lecture Hall in Alexander Library's Scholarly Communication Center, CAC.
