Invert Zoo Description: COURSE MATERIALS: Required: One Quadrille ruled lab notebook, about 100 pages. No spiral bindings! COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the diversity of non-vertebrate animals from evolutionary, ecological, and physiological perspectives. COURSE OBJECTIVES: q Express understanding of the fundamental differences among invertebrate taxa. q Demonstrate knowledge of the relationships among taxa. q Demonstrate the ability to make careful observations of specimens. q Demonstrate skills in identifying invertebrate animals. q Gain an appreciation for the diversity of animals. COURSE POLICIES: Attendance: Lecture and lab attendance will be taken into account in final grade. Prior arrangement must be made for absence from an exam. Grading: 90-100%: A. 86.7-90%: B+. 80-86.6%: B 76.7-80%: C+. 70-76.6%: C. Projected assignments and their valuation: (subject to revision) q 3 exams: 100 pts. each. Will be held in lab and will cover material from lecture, lab, and reading. Third exam is not cumulative. q Weekly quizzes, total 50 pts: 2 lowest scores will be dropped. q Group project: Species page contribution to Animal Diversity Web: 50 pts. q Lab: 100 pts.— notebook, other assignments, and as determined by the TA. q Discretionary: 20 pts. — Participation, group activities, attendance, attitude q Peer Evaluation: 5 pts. — Contribution to group project Late Assignment Policy: 5% will be deducted for each day an assignment is late. |
