Martin Luther King Task Force

"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality."

(King, "A Christmas Sermon on Peace," 1967)

Martin Luther King Jr. Taskforce Opening Reception, January 29, 2008

Mission of the MLK Taskforce

The enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) is a vibrant reminder to us of the unfinished work of civil rights and social justice in the United States.  Dr. King's courage, persistence, and willingness in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles are still exemplary qualities for all of us to emulate.  April 4, 2008 will mark the 40th anniversary of King's assassination, a devastating occurrence for Americans and people all over the world.  The Taskforce on the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., initiated within Student Affairs and comprised of faculty, students, will promote, recommend, and present programs, activities, and projects, inside and outside the classroom, which commemorate and make more visible Dr. King's work and the work of his peers and contemporaries.   The Taskforce will be working with all segments of the campus during the Spring and Fall of 2008 to mark this crucial period of American history.

The Taskforce will host an opening ceremony at the Busch Campus Center on Tuesday, January 29, 2008.  The opening ceremony will feature an all-day showing of Henry Hampton's epic PBS series, Eyes on the Prize, beginning at 12 noon in the Multipurpose Room , to which members of the campus and community are invited.  At 5 p.m. in the same location, the Taskforce will host an opening reception for the campus and community.  From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. the screening of Eyes on the Prize will resume in Center Hall at the Busch Campus.  Please contact Cheryl Clarke at cclarke@rci.rutgers.edu if you are interested in finding out more about the work of the Taskforce.

Recruitment for Public Service Announcements

We are seeking undergraduate students willing to participate in a series of public service announcements on the intergenerational impact of Martin Luther King Jr. on their lives. These public service announcements will be recorded and shown on RUTV and will be part of the University's multimedia informational campaign about the legacy of MLK. Participants can choose to either share personal thoughts on MLK or read from his speeches and writings.
