Bias Prevention and Multicultural Awareness

Bias Prevention involves a system of protocols developed within the student affairs areas to: monitor the climate in order to prevent bias incidents, intervene in such incidents, counsel persons victimized by such incidents, counsel, reprimand, adjudicate persons who perpetrate bias acts, and restore/heal environments in the aftermath of such acts.

The Bias Prevention Education Committee (BPEC), which is chaired by the director, addresses the University’s "Policy Against Verbal Assault, Defamation, and Harassment" by monitoring the campus for bias incidents and supports bias prevention efforts in New Brunswick. Committee Members include representatives from Busch, College Avenue, Cook, Douglass, Livingston campuses as well as representatives from Public Safety, Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance, Undergraduate Education, and the Division of Athletics.

The Bias Prevention Education Committee is dedicated to educating students, staff, and faculty on bias prevention and multicultural awareness; and is guided by five principles: Prevention, Anticipation, Response, Reporting, and Restoration.
