Upcoming Sessions:
May 20 - Engaging with the Sacred Image This workshop will look at images of Hindu deities and Eastern Orthodox icons. On the surface level these works appear very different from each other yet there are similarities in the way they are created, cared for, revered, used in procession, and seen. In fact the act of “seeing” is significant; there is a Sanskrit word “darshan” to describe the process of seeing and being seen by the deity. With both the deity images and the icons, there is energy created within the devotee. The viewer sees past the physical object to a vision of God. Icons are sometimes referred to as “windows to eternity”. The ensuing discussion might consider visualization in other traditions such as Tantric Buddhism and Native American practices. The workshop will meet May 20, 2012 at 12 Noon in the Christian Wing of the Museum of Sacred Art (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bieup/170/46/106/) April 15 - Candi Burobudur In the 9th century a huge stupa was constructed in the middle of the present day island of Java in Indonesia. The structure, meant to be experienced in a series of circumambulations, is filled with hundreds of sculptural panels illustrating the teachings of Buddha. It is topped with 72 Buddhas sitting in bell-shaped stupas with a breathtaking view of the countryside and neighboring volcanoes. The workshop will be in two parts. There will be a brief illustrated introduction in the Buddhist wing of the Museum of Sacred Art (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bieup/202/46/106/). Early arrivals will be able to view a new display of Borobudur that will be installed there. From there, the group will teleport to the Second Life Borobudur in Wensley for an exploration and discussion. The Art History Workshop meets monthly on the third Sunday at 12 noon (Second Life Time) at the Kira Cafe or at the Museum of Sacred Art. The workshop is led by Donald Beetham(Adams Dubrovna), Rutgers University and Sarah Beetham (Papagena Pevensey), University of Delaware. The international group is interdisciplinary with an interest in art and art history. The broad theme of the workshop is exploring the many ways we can look at art including art in Second Life whenever possible. The workshop has been part of a series of offerings of Kira Institute and has benefitted from support and encouragement from Piet Hut and Stormerne Hunt. The workshop often parallels exhibits at the Museum of Sacred Art , also supported by the Kira Institute and the Play as Being group. Donald Beetham is the curator of the museum.
